Bio

Artist Biography


Chris Theiss was born in 1967 in Hope, Rhode Island.  After beginning his art education at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, he transferred to the Rhode Island School of Design where he received his B.F.A. in ceramics in 1990.  He then went on to study under Robert Arneson at U.C. Davis where he received his M.F.A. in studio art in 1992.  Chris was visiting professor of ceramics at the Rhode Island School of Design in 1992 and 1993. He has been a member of the art faculty at Skagit Valley College from 1993 to present.  Chris has exhibited his sculpture and drawings throughout the United States and his work is in collections such as The Mint Museum of Art + Design, Los Angeles County Museum, Crocker Art Museum, University of California Davis, and The California Palace of the Legion of Honor.  Chris’ work is published in a text book titled, “Ceramics for Beginners- hand building”, by Shay Amber and featured on the cover of "Ceramics Art and Perception" issue #100.  Recently one of his drawings was acquired by the Rhode Island School of Design's campus collection and his ceramic works were featured in the current Encyclopedia of Inspiration from Uppercase titled "Vintage Life."

"The Eyes Have It"

"The Eyes Have It" But what exactly is it?  I recently posted a picture on social media of 3 unfinished ceramic forms that were all covered with eyes.  The response that I received was immediate and very positive. The sheer number of "eye puns" was crazy.  From someone who is susceptible to clever artwork titles I have more than enough to chose from now.  But the reaction more than anything made me think about what "eyes"  mean to people. There's an engagement and connection that we have to other humans through eye contact.  But in our times, this may be something that happens not as often as it did in the past. There is also the notion of being watched or "viewed" through digital devices and camera lenses that might resonate with others.  All I know is there's something about these "eye" objects that is worth further exploration.  Stay tuned and we'll "see" what happens next! West Elm RISD Cottage Tour

West Elm RISD Cottage Tour Although I've never had a chance to visit the new RISD Cottage, I feel like I have a bit of a connection to it.  Approximately 1 year ago I received amazing news that the art and design school in Providence, RI, where my parents attended and where they met each other for the first time acquired one of my artworks. My mother would use the RISD Museum as a form of child care, when she went back to finish up her degree in Textile Design.  My sister and I had the extraordinary privilege to be able to attend t he museum's after-school art classes  drawing from the many master works that hung on the walls.    Years later, I was able to attend RISD myself as a student where I thrived artistically and developed so many deep and long lasting personal relationships.  Directly after graduate school, my first professional teaching job was visiting professor in  the RISD ceramic program.  It was truly my dream job.  When I found out that W

~Sgraffito ware~ Sgraffito is a technique that I discovered as a young art student trying to figure out what I wanted to do in the medium of ceramics.  I was coming into clay from a two-dimensional illustration background and although ceramics was at that time new and exciting, I was struggling with feeling that my ability to draw was not being utilized.  The second I started scratching and carving through an applied layer of contrasting clay I knew I had found what I was looking for and for the most part I have never stopped doing it. The grouped objects in the pictured above are examples of wheel thrown vases that vary in size and shape.  After the forms were formed, I brush apply a uniform layer of contrasting colored slip to the entire outer wall.  When that layer is dry to the touch, I carve or scratch through it using various tools to create surface patterns.  Patterns for me, are fun ways to explore positive and negative space relationships as well as illusion.  For those of you
